Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will a newborn bonnet fit?

A: Newborn bonnets are ideal for announcement photos and the first few weeks out of hospital. All designs are made to fit the 50% percentile for head circumference which is 33cm-35cm. A newborn bonnet should last the first 4-6 weeks depending on the size of your baby.

Q: My child is 5 months. Which size should I order?

A: If your child is on the cusp of the next sized bracket, always select the bigger size. This will allow room for growth and a better value for money as you’ll get much more wear out of the bonnet. For example, if your child is 11 months, I recommend ordering the size 1-3 years. You can also see my sizing chart below.

Q: What do you use to make your bonnets?

A: All my bonnets are made with luxury 100% Australian merino wool with the exception of the colour “Eucalyptus” which is made from 50% bamboo and 50% merino wool. I love to support Australian wool growers and believe nothing can beat the warmth of wool. If you’re interesting in cotton or wool alternatives, please get in touch via my Contact Me page to discuss the perfect bonnet for your child.

Q: How do I wash my bonnets?

A: Being a handmade item, crocheted bonnets can be stretched or damaged if not properly washed.

Hand wash your bonnet using a quality wool mix and warm water only. Do NOT wring the bonnet out. Gently place between two towels and squash some of the water out. Dry flat in the shade.

TIP: I use a cake cooling rack on the kitchen bench to ensure my bonnets dry without sun damage or being stretched from pegging.

Q: How should I store my bonnets?

Owing to the handmade nature of crochet, bonnets can become stretched or damaged if not properly stored and cared for. Ideally, bonnets should be stored flat and out of the sun. This is to prevent stretching and colour fading. I recommend the use of a bag to make sure the bonnet doesn’t get caught when opening or closing drawers or snagged on other items. You can purchase a Leo & Evelyn Keepsake Bag for $9 which is the perfect size to store your cherished baby bonnets.

Q: Why did you choose to support the Cancer Council?

You can read more about why I support the Cancer Council on the My Story page.

Q: How should my bonnet be worn by my child?

Each bonnet has been designed in a specific way to ensure the bonnet fits best. The Bell and Elliot bonnets are designed to have the ribbing frame the face. This will allow a much better fit than having the narrow neckline around the face.

The Shelby and Apricot bonnets are designed for the scallops to frame the face. This will allow the detailed sides of the bonnet to adorn the sides of your child’s face and ensure a better fit.

The Perry bonnet is designed for the flat front row to frame the face. The tapered edge is to fit the child’s neckline.

A card with a diagram is included in each order. Should you need any assistance, please check my Instagram or images here on the website for examples.

Q: What is your returns policy?

A: Due to the custom nature of each bonnet style and their unique size and colour combination, returns cannot be accepted. All sales are final unless under extreme circumstances. Please contact me via the Contact Me form to discuss.

Sizing Chart

These bonnets have been designed and made to fit the 50% head circumference. You may find your child is smaller or larger than their age bracket. If your child is on the cusp of the older age bracket, I recommend ordering a larger size. For example, for a 5 month old, I would order the 6-12 months.

Please note the Perry bonnet is a snug fitting bonnet and I recommend sizing up for longevity.
